Zijin Mining Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Zijin Mining” or “the Company”) adheres to the principles of attaching equal importance to the mineral resources exploitation and ecological environment protection and of "development in the protection and protection in development", and is dedicated to doing a good job of environmental protection and ecological restoration during the whole life cycle of the mine, including mine exploration, design, mining, dressing and smelting, closing of mines, so as to minimize the adverse impacts of the mineral resources development activities on the ecological environment, achieving a high degree of harmony and unity of environmental, social and economic benefits.

The Company has formulated a Policy Statement on Protection of the Ecological Environment to allow all stakeholders to have a clearer understanding of the Zijin Mining's position, commitment and work direction for environmental and ecological protection.

Environment management system

Zijin Mining has established a top-down ESG structure under the leadership of the Company's Board of Directors. The Strategic Committee of the Board of Directors has been added with the corresponding responsibilities of the ESG issues management, under which the ESG committee has been established. There is the establishment of a standardized and professional environmental protection management structure system, consisting of the ESG committee → Headquarters Environmental Protection and Ecology Department → Subsidiaries company.

At the same time, in order to improve the standardized management of each operation point, we actively promote ISO14001 certification, as well as other equivalent environmental management systems in the Company, carry out green production, and build green mines and green factories.

Environmental Audit

By preparing and implementing the Environmental Protection and Ecological Assessment Management System, the Environmental Protection and Ecological Inspection Management Regulations, the Basic Standards for Environmental Order Management and so on, Zijin Mining conducts regular internal environmental audits on all subsidiaries to ensure that they comply with the local environmental laws and regulations and the requirements of Zijin Mining's environmental management system. Internal audits are conducted once a month for mining and smelting subsidiaries in Mainland China and once a quarter for overseas subsidiaries. And meanwhile, the Company also engages third-party agencies to conduct environmental audits on mining and smelting subsidiaries. By the end of 2019, the Company has achieved that more than 94% of its subsidiaries conducted external audit at least once every three years, and more than 91% of its subsidiaries conducted external audit at least once a year.

Air emission

The main air pollutants generated by mining and smelting activities of Zijin Mining are sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, smoke and dust. The Company continuously monitors the emission level of each operation point through the environmental management system, and implement emission control measures at all operation points to effectively control both organized and unorganized emissions.

Ø By 2030, the emission intensity of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides will be reduced by at least 5% compared with 2020.

Zijin Mining, holding a positive attitude, carries out emission reduction projects concerning the whole Company in order to achieve the targets for 2030 steadily. Under the leadership of the Board of Directors and management team, each operation point shall implement the emission reduction plan according to local conditions. From June 2018 to April 2019, a set of environmental protection treatment system project with a designed treatment capacity of 30,000 m3/day copper-containing acid water has been built. The treatment process is sulfide neutralization and precipitation. By improving the wastewater treatment capacity and effect, the process control and reduction of heavy metal pollutants have been enhanced. By the end of the "13th Five-Year Plan", heavy metals in Zijinshan Gold and Copper Mine could be reduced by 23% on the basis of 2013.

Wuping Zijin

1. In 2017, the three-way intersections among the temporary storage yards, the silver separation workshops and the mining area are provided with a smog nemesis, and watering devices are set on both sides of roads to effectively reduce dust in the storage yards and roads;

2. In 2017, systems with wastewater treatment have been reconstructed from caustic soda to lime neutralization treatment providing better precipitation effect. In 2018, the total copper emissions decreased by 3.04 kg compared with 2017.

Xinjiang Ashele Copper Industry Co., Ltd.

The heat exchange stations installed 2 sets of solar water heating systems with an investment of RMB 2.13 million, which greatly reduced the electricity consumption of the electric heating system saving about 1 million kWh per year and indirectly reducing about 80 t/y gaseous pollutants.

Xinjiang Jinbao Mining Co., Ltd.

During production and operation process, attention has been paid to waste utilization management, and waste has been reduced by 196,569 t through tailings damming, recycling of discarding tailings and waste rock, paving mining roads with boiler slag in winter, sorted collection of recyclable household waste, etc.

Xinjiang Zijin Zinc

1. In 2019, the SNCR denitration device in the boiler room has been reconstructed. After reconstruction, the nitrogen oxide emissions in the first quarter of 2020 decreased by 1.446 t compared with the first quarter of 2019, and the effect of denitrification was significant;

2. Since 2017, the woven bags for ammonium nitrate have been reused, saving 77,000 bags annually and reducing the pollution to the surrounding environment.

Qinghai West Copper Industry

West Copper Industry started the coal-to-electricity project for boilers in June 2020 and would achieve zero emission of gas pollutants after reconstruction.

Guizhou Zijin Mining

1. Guizhou Zijin started to build an advanced arsenic removal treatment system with a treatment capacity of 25,000 m3/day mine water in April 2018. The system has been put into use since November 2018, and the annual arsenic emission of water pollutants has been reduced by 41.6744 kg;

2. Guizhou Zijin started the heightening project for Phases II & III dams of tailings pool in April 2019, using mining waste rock (general solid waste) as damming materials, and comprehensively utilizing mining waste rock (general solid waste) about 400,000 cubic meters;

3. In December 2018, Guizhou Zijin started to build cyanide breaking process system for cyanide tailings. The system would dispose the cyanide tailings, which are hazardous wastes originally, into general solid waste thus reducing the amount of hazardous wastes.

Wenshan Malipo Zijin Tungsten Group

Nylon net is set around the overflow tower of the tailings pool to effectively reduce the discharge of suspended solids.

Yuanyang Huaxi Gold

Most of the waste rocks generated from underground mining projects are used for backfilling goaf areas. The remaining waste rocks are provided to local residents for building gravel materials and paving roads, so as to make full use of solid wastes and reduce the accumulated amount of waste rock.

Longnan Zijin

In 2018, electric boilers have been used for heating, which can reduce 9.6 t sulfur dioxide and 28 t smoke and dust annually.

Luoning Huatai

1. The processing dust removers of the second workshop have been reconstructed. And after reconstruction, the dust density decreased from 34 mg/m3 to 23.8 mg/m3;

2. The raw ore storage bins of the two workshops are sealed to effectively suppress the unorganized dust emission;

3. Through technical reconstruction for energy conservation and power saving, as well as air compressor reconstruction for energy conservation, electricity could be saved by 4,090,130 kWh/year.

Luoyang Kunyu Mining Co., Ltd.

1. In 2020, a total of 17 portable fog guns has been purchased for dust reduction in waste-rock yards;

2. In July 2020, the roads and unloading platforms of the raw ore storage bin of Wulong processing plant have been hardened to reduce road dust;

3.All mining vehicles are equipped with automatic wind-proof and dust-suppression carports;

4. New washing facilities for incoming and outgoing vehicles have been built; 5. In 2019, the dust removers of Wulong processing plant have been reconstructed. After reconstruction, the dust collection effect has been improved and the organized dust emission has been reduced.

Hunchun Zijin

1. In 2018, a desulphurization device has been added to the heating boiler in the mining area. The concentration of sulfur dioxide in the boiler flue gas has been reduced from 400 mg/m3 to about 100 mg/m3, and the emission of sulfur dioxide has reduced by about 17 t;

2. Strictly control the used engine oil generated in the processing plant, conduct protective recycle for the used engine oil generated in the equipment maintenance as much as possible, and reuse it through oil filter. The amount of used engine oil can be reduced by about 5% annually;

3. Turn the waste rocks produced in open pit to useful materials, and treat them as stone resources to reduce the amount of solid waste.

Heilongjiang Duobaoshan Copper Industry Inc.

By reconstructing the desulphurization and denitration process of boilers since 2018, Duobaoshan Copper Industry Inc. has made its pollutant emission far below the standards, with the emission concentration of sulfur dioxide ≤ 50 mg/standard m3, nitrogen oxides ≤ 200 mg/standard m3 and dust ≤ 30 mg/standard m3. Therefore, the amount of gas pollutants has been reduced greatly.

Urad Rear Banner Zijin Mining

The heating project for comprehensive waste heat utilization would be built to replace the original coal-fired boiler, and the annual emission of dust would be reduced by 4.15 t, nitrogen oxides by 12.17 t and sulfur dioxide by 3.93 t.

Neimenggu Golden China Minerals Inc.

Neimenggu Golden China Minerals Inc. optimized the mining and stripping plan, and backfilled the pits reducing the amount of solid waste by 1.2 million cubic meters.

Shanxi Zijin

1. The excavated waste rocks are used for filling the underground goaf area thus reducing the amount of waste rocks by about 40,000 t annually;

2. In 2018, the 2T coal-fired boiler in the office building of the Company has been replaced with an electric heat storage boiler, reducing sulfur dioxide by 0.43 t, dust by 0.36 t and nitrogen oxides by 0.79 t.

Zijin Copper

1. Since 2018, the project of comprehensive utilization and harmless disposal of copper smelting resources has been built. The project is mainly built for mineralization and stabilization of hazardous wastes and arsenic precipitation by ferric arsenate, and comprehensive utilization of copper-containing materials produced by the copper smelting system of the Company for recycling valuable elements such as lead, zinc, copper and bismuth, and reducing the amount of hazardous wastes;

2. In June 2019, the acid-making off-gas reconstruction project has been implemented, and the original dry flue gas desulphurization by activated coke has been replaced by wet flue gas desulphurization by hydrogen peroxide which has effectively improved the desulphurization efficiency of sulfur dioxide in flue gas and reduced the average sulfur dioxide concentration from 200 mg/m3 to 90 mg/m3;

3. In 2020, in order to achieve the target of hazardous waste reduction, a project concerning changing the hazardous waste of telluride copper to smelting by-product as per the national standards has been implemented planning to reduce the amount of hazardous wastes by 200 tons/year;

4. The construction of environmental smoke collection reconstruction project would be completed in December 2020. The existing desulphurization system of environmental smoke collection would be reconstructed to a wet dust remover strengthening washing efficiency and increasing high-efficiency so as to remove the pollutants in flue gas thoroughly. In addition, a set of converter treatment systems adopting environmental smoke collection is added to collect and treat unorganized flue gas which cannot be handled by the existing environmental smoke collection system. The technology of "bag dust removal + sodium-alkali desulphurization + high efficiency wet electrostatic precipitator" is adopted to further reduce unorganized emission.

Jilin Zijin Copper

Since 2017, Jilin Zijin Copper Co., Ltd. has been building a fuming acid project to improve the capture rate of sulfur and reduce the emission of sulfur dioxide. The total reduction of sulfur dioxide would reach 19.096 t.

1. Bayannur Zijin Co., Ltd. built a new two-residue harmless treatment project. After technical reconstruction, no lead-silver residue, jarosite residue and other hazardous wastes would be produced any longer;

2. In 2018, an advanced waste water treatment project has been built so as to realize full recycling of waste water and reduce the discharge of water pollutants.

Gold Smelting Co., Ltd.

Since October 2019, four sets of vacuum spraying systems (caustic soda spraying systems) have been built for waste gas treatment system successively to improve the treatment capacity for waste gas during production process and achieve the emission reduction target.

Fujian Zijin Copper

Since 2017, the Company has been paying attention to hazardous waste management during production and operation. By purchasing emulsion treatment equipment and oil extraction equipment for oil-bearing diatomite, the waste emulsion has been reduced by 70%, and the oil-bearing diatomite has been reduced by 15 t annually.

Pharmaceutical company

In the project, the distillation and rectification processes of intermediate products have been improved. The remaining part achieves resource utilization as being made into fuel oil by-products, which greatly reduces the amount of distillation residues and the amount of hazardous waste. The average annual reduction reaches more than 40 t.

Xinjiang Kuitun Tongguan Metallurgical and Chemical Industry

In 2019, a new electrostatic precipitator has been added to the off-gas sulphuric acid discharge outlet to remove the sodium salt particles generated during sodium-alkali desulphurization, and the emission amount of the particles has reduced by 19.2 t compared with 2018.

Luoning Zijin

1. In 2018, an off-gas denitrating tower and a high gas-velocity conductive glass steel electrostatic precipitator are added in the off-gas hydrogen peroxide absorption tower so as to optimize the indexes of nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, acid mist and water in discharged off-gas through compound denitrification agent for denitrification washing and wet electrostatic defogging technology, and eliminate the phenomenon of chimney foaming and steam;

2. In 2018, a cyanide residue harmless treatment project has been built adopting activated carbon leaching process for recovering precious metals, SO2 + O2 oxidation method for eliminating cyanogen, so as to reduce the disposal amount of hazardous wastes.

Luoyang Zijin Yinhui

In 2018, a 100-ton gold purification project has five sets of spray towers for environmental protection facilities added, which can reduce the annual emissions of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides by 20% and 10% respectively.

Heilongjiang Zijin Copper Co., Ltd.

Hydroelectricity composed tower is adopted in the end treatment facilities of flue gas treatment system, which reduce the emission of sulfur dioxide and dust by spraying caustic soda and electrostatic precipitator, and the emission indexes can meet the requirements of ultra-clean emission.

Jinshan High-abrasive Material Co., Ltd.

Since July 2020, the Company upgraded and reconstructed the existing casting line and quenching line with an annual output of 10,000 t to reduce the consumption of coated sand and resin by about two-thirds, and use tap water as the medium directly while eliminating the use of industrial salt as quenching medium thus greatly reducing the amount of waste.

Longxing

Power plants use the heat of generators for heating, which reduces the consumption of coal. In the past three years, coal consumption has been reduced by about 1,000 t.

COMMUS

1. Since 2018, the Company has paid attention to pollutant emission reduction during production and operation, of which sulfur dioxide in smelters has been reduced by 16%;

2. From 2019 to 2020, the topsoil of the northern slope was used as the humus soil for greening of the Company thus reducing emission for 20,000 cubic meters in total;

3. Since June 2020, a contract was signed between the smelter and La Carrière Du Lualaba Société par Actions Simplifiée (Cement Plant) for handling residue extraction of external discharge at an earlier stage. All residue extraction of external discharge would be discharged to the cement plant to realize waste utilization, with a monthly emission reduction of 12,000 t.

Norton

1. Since 2014, waste oil has been uniformly recycled and reused to prevent surface pollution and water pollution. The total recycled waste oil is 104 t;

2. By upgrading trucks and introducing high efficient engines in the land mining project, the emission of carbon dioxide and other waste gases can be reduced by 80,000/m3.

Zeravshan

In the past 3 years, the Company has contacted the surrounding villages and towns, and the waste rocks stripped from the mining plant are using for building houses of the villagers and laying municipal roads, reducing the emission of solid waste by nearly 120,000 t.

Serbia Zijin Bor Copper

Since the acquisition, waste management has been the focus during the production and operation process, pollutant emission has been controlled from the source, qualified units have been entrusted for disposing hazardous wastes, industrial water has been reused, and waste electrolyte treatment system has been built. The total emission was reduced by 480 t.

Continental Gold

In 2018 and 2019, it signed an agreement with ECONCIENCIA (a local garbage recycling company) to process recyclable garbage into plastic wood. The garbage had been processed in the garbage dump in Platanal.

Solid wastes management

Zijin Mining strictly follows the Law on Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Wastes, the Standard for Pollution Control on the Storage and Disposal Site for General Industrial Solid Wastes and the Standard for Pollution Control on the Security Landfill Site for Hazardous Wastes in China as well as the laws and regulations of the countries (regions) where overseas ownership enterprises are located, pays attention to waste management during the production and operation, selects raw materials with low harm, low toxicity and less waste from the source, optimizes the process by improving design and operating conditions, improves the conversion rate of raw materials and product output rate, and maximizes the recycling of resources at the end, so as to reduce the generation of the waste.

Water resources management

Access to safe and hygienic water resources is not only a basic human right, but also an important resource for mining and processing. Zijin Mining Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Zijin Mining" or "the Company") has been committed to responsible water resources management. In the process of production and operation, the Company continuously optimizes water resources management, improves water resources utilization rate and reduces the negative impact of enterprises on local water resources. The Company has formulated the Statement on Water Resources Management Policies of Zijin Mining to allow all stakeholders to have a clearer understanding of the Company's position, commitment and work direction for water resources protection.

Water resources risk assessment

In order to effectively identify and assess the water resources risk of the place where it operates and its impact on the business of the Company, we conduct water resources risk assessment with mainstream standards, so as to support the planning and implementation of water conservation projects.

As of the end of 2019, the water resources risk assessment project carried out by the Company has covered all operation points under its subsidiaries.

In the future, the Company will continue to pay attention to the water resources risk management standards and tools of the industry, and consider cooperating with or World Wildlife Fund (WWF), World Resources Institute (WRI) and other institutions to continuously improve water resources risk management.

The return water from tailings pool is recycled in the grinding-floating workshop of processing plant through return water pump house and high-level reservoir, which can save 2.52 million cubic meters of new water every year.

Xinjiang Jinbao Mining Co., Ltd.

In the production and operation process, Xinjiang Jinbao Mining Co., Ltd. pays attention to the management of waste water recycling. After treatment, the water inflow of pit and domestic sewage can be reused in the production system, saving 3,264,657 liters of water.

Xinjiang Zijin Zinc

1. The transformation project of domestic sewage treatment system was completed in 2018. After upgrading, the daily treatment of domestic sewage was 120 m3. Part of the water after reaching the standard was put into the production system, and part of the water was sprinkled for dust reduction in the mining area, saving about 39,600 cubic meters of new water annually;

2. In 2018, three sets of 110 m3/h water suction pumps were replaced with 220 m3/h pumps in the tailings pool, which increased the recycling amount of waste water in tailings pool and reduced the utilization of new water. In this way, the annual utilization of return water was about 1.44 million cubic meters;

3. The cooling system transformation of diaphragm pump reducer in the processing plant was completed in 2018. Ecological environment protection and land use

Zijin Mining insists on intensive land use, minimizes land disturbance, effectively manages land resources, and controls mine geological disasters, water and soil erosion, and so on. In addition, Zijin Mining integrates land reclamation and ecological restoration in mining areas throughout every aspect of mining activities. Based on the technical characteristics of different mining periods and natural environment factors, Zijin Mining formulates and timely adjusts the reclamation and ecological restoration planning schemes at all project operation points. In 2018, the Company invested nearly RMB 300,000 to carry out greening and beautification work for the plant area, with the green area of about 4,800 square meters, and the greening rate of 19.1%; In the first half of 2020, the Company invested nearly RMB 50,000 to plant 45 new green trees (large) with the restoration green area of about 190 square meters.
