Indigenous People Rights

Respect for the rights of indigenous people is also an important part of our work in respect and protection of human rights. We respect the collective and traditional rights, as well as their culture and relation with local lands. If there may be any negative effects in the process of exploration, design, operation and closure, we will try to obtain indigenous people's autonomous and prior informed consent, and provide assistance for sustainable development.

    Before the operation of a new project, we negotiate with the indigenous people who may or actually have been affected by the project, and formulate policies and procedures related to the indigenous people according to their opinions.

    We establish community relations coordination departments according to the culture, customs and social conditions of the host country, and formulate and implement a communication and complaint mechanism, which is in accord with the community management rules of Zijin Mining. Besides, we establish a complaint and cooperation mechanism which is compatible with the culture of indigenous groups, so that these groups of people can communicate with our company smoothly, and we ensure that all the communication could be handled properly.

    We organize regular trainings for all staff involved in or related to indigenous people culture in activities of operation or exploration.

    During the process of design, development and operation of the project, we respect the rights, interests, wishes, culture and natural resource-based lifestyle of indigenous people. Mitigation level is adopted to reduce the adverse effects thus to bring sustainable benefits to indigenous people.

    The private security agencies should formulate relevant regulations on appropriate behaviors and local use of force. They also need to accept the supervision of relevant governments or law enforcement agencies, as well as the inspection of our company or the third party employed by our company, so as to ensure that the operation of the private security agencies meets the requirements of local laws and this policy.

    We require that all private security agencies can only provide preventive and defensive security services within the legal range, rather than participate in activities relating with military or security beyond the security limitation.

    Private security agencies should have services, technologies and devices for offensive and defensive purposes, but the services, technologies and devices should only be used for defensive purposes. Besides, they should provide necessary trainings for security staff to ensure a high level of technical and professional competence. In addition, relevant staff and stakeholders also need to be trained to ensure a full understanding and application of relevant policies and procedures.

    For those private security agencies who provide security services for us, we require them to follow the principle of voluntariness. We also supervise them regularly.

    For issues related to the law enforcement authorization of security staff and human rights issues, we hand it over to public officials dispatched by local governments or security companies with such authorizations. We cooperate with the host governments to deal with controversial security incidents.
