Environmental and Ecological Protection

We always adhere to the ecological and environmental protection concept of “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets", as well as the principle of "Development in protecting and protection in developing". We pay equal attention to the development of mineral resources and the protection of ecological environment, and we try to do a good job in environmental protection and ecological restoration in the whole life cycle of mine exploration, design, mining, dressing and smelting and mine closure, with the hope to minimize the adverse impact of mineral resources development activities on the ecological environment. Our goal is to achieve a complete harmony and unity of environment, society and economic benefits as much as possible, thus to provide sustainable heritage for the project sites.

Main Performance in 2020:
  • 0
    Ecological Damaging Incident
We have achieved the goal of no unexpected environmental events on general stage and above nor ecological damaging events throughout the year.
  • 50%
    Certification coverage
Our target of ISO14001 Certification is that: By 2023, 100% of the existing mining and smelting enterprises will have passed the ISO14001 standard certification (excluding newly acquired enterprises). Achievements in 2020: 19 ownership enterprises have passed the ISO14001 standard certification, with 3 newly added than last year. Now the certification coverage rate has reached 50%.
  • 92.82%
    Water Resources Recycling Rate
In 2020, the total amount of process water consumption is 693.54 million tons, of which the consumption of new water is 49.81 million tons, accounting for only 7.18%. It is mainly used to make a supplement of water consumed in the process and water-carrying products. The water resources recycling rate has reached 92.82%
  • 10.92Billion Yuan
    Environmental Protection and Ecology Funds
In 2020, we have invested 1.092 billion yuan in environmental protection and ecology, including 95.826 million yuan in ecological restoration. We have restored vegetation for about 3.333 million square meters and have also planted 409,000 flowers and trees.
  • 13
    National Green Mines
At present, we have 13 "National Green Mines", 2 "Provincial Green Mines", 4 "National Green Factories" and 2 "Provincial Green Factories", with an increase of 4 national green mines and 2 national green factories compared with the previous year.
  • 92.1%
    External Verification
By the end of 2020, 92.1% of the enterprises receive external verification at least once every three years, and 89.5% of them receive external verification at least once a year.
Our Approach:
  • Policies and Rules
We have formulated the Policy Statement on Protection of the Ecological Environment, so that all stakeholders can have a clearer understanding of our standpoint, commitment and working direction on environmental and ecological protection. It can also help us to build a strong stakeholder relationship. We are also committed to applying the highest standards of environmental management, making an efficient use of natural resources and energy, recycling and reducing waste, striving to protect the biological diversity, and responding to the change of global climate actively to reduce its impact on the future.
    Policies and Rules
  • Management Structure
We have established an environmental protection management organization system under the leadership of the Strategic and Sustainable Development (ESG) Committee of the board of directors. And we have also established a Safety, Environmental Protection, Public Security and Fire Protection Committee (hereinafter referred to as "Safety Committee") in the group headquarter.
The president of our company serves as the director of the Safety Committee. The Environmental Protection and Ecology Department is set up in the group headquarter, and it takes the responsibility of coordinating the implementation of the environmental protection and ecological management work of our whole group. All the ownership enterprises have also set up corresponding environmental protection and ecological management organizations, and their workshops are also equipped with environmental protection administrators.
    Management Structure
  • Environmental Impact Assessment
Before the construction of projects, we compile EIA report in accordance with the law, and strictly implement the environmental impact assessment policies. We investigate, predict and evaluate the possible negative effects on the surrounding environment of the site selection, design and operation after the construction. Solutions are proposed to prevent and report for approval according to the legal procedures. After approval, the construction shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the EIA report, and we also need to ensure that the pollution prevention facilities should be designed, constructed and put into use together with the main construction project at the same time.
    Environmental Impact Assessment
  • Environmental Monitor System
We require all ownership enterprises to entrust qualified testing institutions to regularly monitor the main pollutants and characteristic pollutants according to the monitor plan every year. At present, 14 mining enterprises in our group have installed the on-line waste water monitor system (accounting for about 70% of waste water discharging enterprises), and 7 sheltering enterprises have installed the on-line waste gas monitor system (accounting for about 87.5% of smelting enterprises), so we have achieved effective monitoring and management of pollutants. We have also established an environmental protection and ecology information platform, so that we could get early warnings of the total amount and discharging concentration of pollutants by setting a warning value. We could also collect big data about environmental protection and ecology through the information management platform. In this way, we could make a full use of big data for its technical advantages of statistical analysis in aspects of pre-warning prediction, analysis and decision-making as well as daily management.
    Environmental Monitor System
  • Compliance Review
We require all ownership enterprises to conduct regular reviews of internal or external environment to ensure that the operation complies with the environmental laws and regulations of the host country as well as the requirements of our environmental management rules. The internal audit of mines and smelters projects operated in China should be carried out once a month, while that of mines and smelters projects operated abroad should be carried out at least once a quarter. We also invite a third party to inspect the ownership enterprises of mines and smelting as needed.
    Compliance Review
  • EMS Certification
We require all the mining, smelting and processing enterprises to follow the requirements of ISO14001 Environmental Management System Certification, so as to improve our performance of environmental management. At present, 19 ownership enterprises have passed the ISO14001 Environmental Management System Certification, and we plan to have all the enterprises (newly built ones are excluded) pass the certification before 2023.
    EMS Certification
  • Performance Appraisa
We have established a relatively sound responsibility system for environmental protection, defining the responsibilities of protecting the ecological environment for different levels. People in charge from different levels sign responsible letters for protecting the ecological environment. We regularly assess the ecological environmental protection performance of all the ownership enterprises and departments. We also assess the contractors’ environmental protection work. We hope to work with the contractors to improve environmental performance.
    Performance Appraisa
  • Emergency Management
We require all enterprises to assess environmental risks according to relevant laws and regulations of their local countries, as well as analyzing and predicting potential risks and harmful factors existing in projects. They also need to determine the type of accident, the extent of harm and the scope of influence. The Emergency Plan for Unexpected Environmental Events is formulated according to the actual situation, and it proposes a solution for risk prevention. We also establish an emergency response system with local governments and communities. The emergency plans are revised every three years. Emergency drillings are held at least once a year to ensure the practicality of the plan.
    Emergency Management
  • Training
We pay attention to the improvement of environmental protection awareness and business skills of all staff (including suppliers and contractors). And the trainings of laws and regulations of ecological environmental protection, operation as well as the key points of ecological environmental protection management have been added to our annual activity of “Environment Safety Month”, together with the environmental protection public benefit activities.
