Kamoa-Kakula reports Q2 production of 87,000 tonnes of copper
2022/07/08 7025

·  The Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine reports quarterly copper production of 87,000 tonnes in Q2, 2022, which will enable the mining complex to deliver in the upper range of its 2022 production guidance of 340,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate.

·  The de-bottlenecking program is on track to boost Kamoa-Kakula’s annual production to 450,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate per year by Q2, 2023.

·  Construction of its Phase 3 and the smelter is progressing well, with commissioning expected in Q4, 2024. By then, Kamoa-Kakula’s copper production capacity will rise to approximately 600,000 tonnes per annum.

Zijin News – The Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine, one of Zijin Mining’s projects, recently announced that it has set a new quarterly production record in the second quarter of 2022, with 87,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate produced, bringing its total production in the first half of 2022 to 143,000 tonnes. With its Phase 1 and Phase 2 concentrator plants running at steady-state or high performance, Kamoa-Kakula is well on track to reach the upper end of its 2022 copper production guidance of 340,000 tonnes.

The Phase 1 and Phase 2 concentrator plants are approaching a combined annualized production rate of approximately 400,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate. The de-bottlenecking program is on track to boost Kamoa’s annual production to approximately 450,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate per year by the second quarter of 2023.

Meanwhile, ongoing mining optimization work at the mine aims to improve head grade to 6% copper during the second half of 2022.

The Phase 3 expansion is advancing well, with the construction of the Phase 3 box cut and decline ramp at Kamoa 1 and Kamoa 2 nearing completion. Basic engineering design for the 5-million-tonne-per-annum concentrator plant is also approaching completion, with procurement activities underway.

Upon commencement of production of Phase 3 in Q4, 2024, the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine will have a total processing capacity of over 14 million tonnes per annum and see its annual copper production capacity rise to 600,000 tonnes. This will position Kamoa-Kakula as the world’s third-largest copper mining complex.

The basic engineering on the smelter design has been completed, and steady progress is being made on all fronts.

With the ongoing Sustainable Livelihoods Program, the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine continues to strengthen food security and farming capacity in the host communities near Kamoa-Kakula by establishing an agricultural demonstration garden to support farmers at the community level.

Today, approximately 900 community farmers are benefiting from the Sustainable Livelihoods Program. The program commenced with maize and vegetable production, and now produces many high-value crops, including fruit, aquaculture, poultry, and honey.
