Towards a low-carbon future
Towards a low-carbon future
Providing the materials that improve standards of living in a low-carbon future

It is a global consensus that the world needs to control greenhouse gas emissions and curb global warming.

Zijin Mining has released the first Climate Change Action Plan in China’s metals mining industry, one that is aligned with the TCFD framework. We aim to peak our carbon emissions by 2029 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This represents our contribution to keeping the global temperature rise to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century.

Critical minerals for the renewable energy transition

The mining sector serves as an engine for the global low-carbon transition.

As a major diversified global mining company, Zijin Mining recognizes the crucial role of critical minerals in the world’s low-carbon transition. We are committed to leading the charge against climate challenges.

We align our growth with the future of humanity, continuously expanding our production of key minerals such as copper and gold. We are rapidly advancing the extraction of renewable energy minerals such as lithium, molybdenum, silver, zinc and lead, providing the metals needed for clean energy technologies worldwide and driving the low-carbon transition.

Shaping a Green and Sustainable Value Chain

The shift toward a low-carbon economy relies heavily on innovating and enhancing renewable energy technologies and advanced materials.

Leveraging our mining expertise, Zijin Mining has strategically expanded into the downstream sector of renewable energy materials, striving to achieve breakthroughs in the industry.

We have established a Research Institute of Renewable Energy and Advanced Materials and operate projects that produce lithium iron phosphate, electro-deposited copper foil, high-performance alloys, and various rare and precious metals. Additionally, we have been advancing cooperation on ammonia-based hydrogen energy technology. Our new materials value chain is growing stronger.

Our Journey Towards Green and Low-Carbon Mining

Global progress towards a low-carbon future relies heavily on the sustainable extraction of mineral resources.

We actively address climate change across our host jurisdictions by practicing low and zero-carbon principles in everything we do at our operations. We enhance energy efficiencies, replace fossil fuels with clean energy, and implement hydro and solar power projects. Additionally, we develop green mines, restoring and strengthening carbon sinks in the ecosystem and reducing the carbon footprint of our business.

Environmental protection can be achieved during resource extraction. Zijin Mining has built many beautiful green mines worldwide through rehabilitation.

We start ecological rehabilitation as soon as mine construction begins. Our mines worldwide are equipped with downstream online water monitoring systems, open to supervision by local governments or government-authorized third parties.

  • Using Clean Energy
    Green power initiatives
We produce solar, hydro, and wind power on idle land, rooftops, and waterways near our mines and smelters. We also collaborate with partners to boost use of our renewable energy.
  • Promoting Clean Fuel
Switching from diesel and coal to electricity
Our diesel-powered vehicles are being replaced by electric mine trucks, dump trucks, and heavy trucks powered by renewable energy. Similarly, coal-fired boilers are being replaced by electric boilers.
  • Adopting Green Technologies
    Low-carbon technology innovations and applications
Through technological innovation, we improve production processes, introduce advanced equipment, and swiftly replace or revamp outdated machinery, enhancing productivity and significantly reducing carbon emissions per unit of product.
