In late October, President Zou Laichang of Zijin Mining, a leading multinational mining group, visited the company’s project in Suriname, the Rosebel Gold Mine, to check operational performance and set future goals.

During the two-day visit, President Zou inspected key areas of the project, including the open-pit mines, the processing plant, and the tailings dam. He was briefed by the project’s management on operational performance and had discussions with both Chinese and international managers of the project.

President Zou praised the achievements that Rosebel has made since Zijin Mining’s acquisition. He acknowledged the successful integration of businesses and the adoption of the Zijin management model, which has led to improvements and progress in safety, production capacity, management, cost savings, and cultural integration.

Looking ahead, President Zou pointed out four priorities for the project. He emphasized increasing investments to maximize the extraction of the gold resources, expand reserves, and extend the life of the mine.

He also highlighted operational efficiency, pointing out the need for a better layout of the concentrator plant, higher recovery of minerals from the tailings, smarter equipment choices, better estimation of return on equipment investment, more automation, and cutting maintenance and spare part costs.

Emphasizing Zijin’s strong commitment to ESG principles, President Zou stressed the importance of compliance with laws and regulations, environmental protection, and sound community relations. He said that Rosebel should put into practice the principle of “green mountains are gold mountains”, working to meet carbon peaking and neutrality goals and achieving harmony between man and nature.

Acknowledging that the Rosebel Gold Mine has a young and international management team, President Zou Laichang called for efforts to shape it into Zijin’s hub for international talent and cultural exchange.
