Kyzyl-Tashtyg is a high-quality, ultra-large, zinc-rich polymetallic mine, with a design throughput of 1 million tonnes per annum. It stands as a successful example of China-Russia cooperation in mining.
Kyzyl-Tashtyg is being developed in two phases. Phase I (2008–2019): Built and commissioned open-pit mining operations with an annual capacity of 1 million tonnes and a processing plant, with production commencing in 2015. Phase II (2020–present): Transitioned to underground mining, employing the pillarless sublevel caving method. After receiving state approval in 2021, the mine entered a five-year construction period.
In 2023, Stage II of underground mining (below -100m level) began production ahead of schedule, supporting stable and efficient operations. By the end of March 2026, the -300m level of the underground mine had been connected with the central ventilation shaft, and the No. 4 decline had been developed to the-330m level. Work is now progressing on bringing Stage III of underground mining into production. In May 2025, construction began on the tailings dam expansion project, which is scheduled for completion by the end of October 2027.
In 2006, Zijin Mining acquired a 70% interest in the Kyzyl-Tashtyg Zinc-Lead Project in Tuva, Russia. Heilongjiang Longxing International Resources Development Group Co., Ltd. holds the remaining 30%.
Through internal and external training programs, the operation strengthens the local talent pipeline. It has also supported a wide range of community initiatives, including the Reindeer Herders’ Cultural Festival hosted by the Todzha District Government; a greenhouse project in Todzha District; a book fair at the Tuva Republic Library; and a children’s summer camp project at Azas Lake in Todzha District.
With its financial support, the design and upgrading works for the Kyzyl-Saryg-Shep Highway (KM20+500–KM23+500 section) were completed. The mine also plans to finance the construction of a kindergarten in Todzha District with a capacity for 160 children, and has sponsored new equipment for the Ak-Dovurak Technical College to help improve teaching quality.
