La Arena Copper-Gold Mine is a high-quality, large-scale producing open-pit copper-gold operation in South America. It is located in the porphyry Cu-Mo-Au metallogenic belt in the La Libertad Region of northern Peru, part of the world-renowned Andes. The mine features a vertically zoned mineral system, with gold in the upper section and copper in the lower section. Phase I is a producing heap-leach gold oxide operation, while Phase II is a large porphyry copper-gold project in the study stage. The mine hosts substantial copper and gold resources and has strong potential for further resource expansion through exploration.
Phase II is currently under study and requires further exploration and development plan evaluation. Open-pit mining is planned, with the process expected to include drilling, blasting, loading and haulage. In processing, crushing, semi-autogenous grinding, ball milling and flotation are planned. According to preliminary studies, the project will adopt open-pit mining and flotation methods. Based on a designed processing throughput of 33 million tonnes per annum, its annual output is expected to reach approximately 100,000 tonnes of copper and 4 tonnes of gold.
On December 3, 2024, Zijin Mining completed the acquisition of a 100% interest in the La Arena Copper-Gold Mine from Pan American Silver, a Canadian listed company. Zijin Mining currently holds a 100% interest in the mine through Jinteng Mining.
At La Arena, 98% of positions are held by local employees, and the operation supports a further 1,942 indirect jobs through its contractors. In 2025, it implemented a range of social responsibility initiatives focused on agriculture, education, healthcare and local economic development. It has also built long-term partnerships with 47 local businesses, helping to drive regional growth. In 2025, La Arena contributed more than US$21.7 million in taxes and other payments to the Peruvian government and spent over US$250 million on local procurement, making a significant contribution to the local economy.
In environmental protection, La Arena follows high international standards. It has received Peru’s Blue Certificate (Certificado Azul) from the National Water Authority on three occasions and earned the highest three-star rating (Tercera Estrella) under the Ministry of the Environment’s carbon reduction program. In 2025, it commissioned Peru’s first fleet of 50 battery-electric mining trucks, becoming the country’s first mining company to deploy zero-emission haulage at scale.
In the same year, in recognition of its strong performance in environmental protection, innovation and social responsibility, La Arena was given the National Sustainable Development Award (Premio Nacional de Desarrollo Sostenible) by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy of Peru—it was the only Chinese mining company honored that year.
