Nkwe Platinum Limited provided approximately R150,000.00 worth of sponsorships towards the community youth soccer tournament, which took place at the soccer field at the Garatouw junior sports field, from 28th – 29th October 2023.
The soccer tournament began on Saturday, 28th October with 8 teams of youth players from the mine’s directly-affected communities of Garatouw, Maandagshoek, De Kom and Hoepakrantz. They competed in a knockout with various teams being eliminated in the different rounds, culminating in semi-final and final matches on Sunday, 29th October.
The sponsorships included refreshment snacks and beverages for all 8 teams, soccer kits for these teams, as well as medals, trophies, and large cash prizes for the three winning teams. The Company also sponsored the lease of chairs, tents, and transportation for the players over the two-day tournament.
Royal Pirates clinched the tournament by defeating Kgoshi Mpuru 2-0; the third and fourth play-off saw Mabalane FC beating Baphuthi FC 1-0. Royal Pirates took home R10 000, for winning the tournament, the runners-up Kgoshi Mpuru FC won R5000 while third place, Mabalane received R2500.
In concluding the tournament, Nkwe Platinum Limited also honoured best players who competed in the tourney. Mpho Mahomane was elected player and goalkeeper of the tournament. Tumelo Mahlakoane, was voted the best young player while Comfort Moropa’s was the top goal scorer.
