Liex: Transforming the Desert into an Oasis
2024/10/29 3722

After enduring several days of intense sandstorms, employees at Liex SA, Zijin Mining’s subsidiary in Argentina, gathered at dawn for a tree-planting mission. Together, they transported saplings, cleared sites, and planted new trees, successfully adding 200 Acacia seedlings to the landscape in just a matter of minutes.

Liex SA's lithium carbonate processing plant is located in the Puna Desert, a region known for its extreme aridity and frequent sandstorms. The area, locally referred to as the 'land of wind and sand,' experiences wind speeds of up to 11 on the Beaufort scale. The annual evaporation rate here is a staggering 3,000 millimeters, while the rainfall is a mere 100 millimeters—making the evaporation rate 30 times higher than the precipitation.

Liex SA, in line with Zijin Mining's unwavering commitment to sustainability, has been diligently implementing its Ecological Reforestation Project. Since November 2022, the company has planted 10,260 seedlings of cold- and drought-resistant species, including acacia, pepper tree, oleander, and mesquite. Overcoming water scarcity, poor soil quality, and relentless sandstorms, the team has installed an efficient water-saving drip irrigation system. Coupled with grass planting for sand stabilization and shrub planting, these efforts have resulted in a vegetation survival rate exceeding 60%. The reforested area now encircles the processing plant, covering 68,000 square meters of previously barren land and transforming it into a vibrant green landscape.

Thanks to the continuous care and commitment of Zijin employees, the newly planted trees and plants are set to create a thriving green oasis in the Puna Wilderness, leaving a valuable ecological legacy for future generations.
