Exploring dense forests and scaling steep peaks, a team of dedicated female geologists from Balkan Exploration and Mining D.o.o. Beograd (BEM), a subsidiary of Zijin Mining’s exploration arm, embarks on a journey of resilience and passion.
Sanja Gavrilovic: Following in Family Footsteps
For Sanja Gavrilovic, geology is the “mountain” she is destined to climb. With a family legacy in the field—her grandfather, father, mother, and uncle all worked as geologists—she grew up surrounded by rock specimens and maps, which became her childhood companions.
In 2019, she first heard about Zijin Mining at a geology conference. By 2021, with a Master’s degree in Economic Geology, she joined BEM as a junior geologist, marking the beginning of her dream and a new chapter in life. Since then, Sanja has expanded her knowledge and skills, actively participating in practical projects to improve her hands-on skills and teamwork capabilities.
Her solid expertise and dedication earned her recognition as BEM’s Outstanding Employee of 2023. Today, she has greater responsibilities, leading the Tilva Ros greenfield project. Looking ahead, Sanja aspires to make further contributions to geological exploration and resource extraction, following in the footsteps of those who came before her.
Dragana Bosić: An Unyielding Spirit
In 2019, Dragana Bosić joined BEM, working on geological exploration for the Čukaru Peki copper-gold project. Reflecting on her early days, Dragana remembers the challenges: “I was among the first to join Zijin here. Could the old mines in Bor be revived? Could I realize my true potential here? These questions made the future feel daunting.”
Back then, she was the only woman on the field geology team for the Čukaru Peki mine, a new project. Her colleagues initially tried to be accommodating by offering her easier tasks. However, Dragana resolutely declined, asserting her professional commitment. In the face of harsh natural environments and complex geological conditions, she held her ground and excelled, achieving personal and professional growth.
She drafted the Čukaru Peki Drill Core Sample Assessment Manual and presented insights on the project’s geological structure and exploration techniques at a company training session, earning applause from her peers. Over four years, Dragana progressed from a newcomer to a respected colleague, and was recognized as BEM’s Best Employee in 2020 and Best Manager in 2023. Now, as a project manager, she oversees project progress and geological exploration for the Čukaru Peki copper-gold mine.
Currently pursuing a PhD in Geology at the University of Belgrade, she continues to strive for excellence and fulfill her dream. Her PhD research project, the “Navigator Plan” , “got strong support from Zijin,” said Dragana.
Anastasija Milosevic: Embracing the Power of Women
A new member of the team, Anastasija Milosevic joined BEM a year ago as a junior geologist. Initially overwhelmed by the rugged terrain, blazing sun, and heavy data tasks, she found strength in her team’s resilience and the confidence of her female colleagues. With their support, Anastasija quickly acquired new skills and grew professionally.
On one occasion, tasked with assisting geological engineers in analyzing and processing field survey data for Serbia Zijin Copper’s concessions, Anastasija approached each data point methodically, double-checking every detail with precision. Her careful work ensured that she not only completed her task to high standards but also made meaningful contributions to the work of her team.
Milica Maletić: Relishing the Challenge
Milica Maletić’s passion for geology began in high school. She acknowledges the field’s tough working conditions but thrives on its challenges. Primarily responsible for drill core logging and the verification of drill hole locations, she meticulously checks every detail to ensure accuracy for further analysis and resource evaluation.
Despite the challenges posed by fragmented drill cores, Milica’s persistence and her willingness to consult with senior geologists led her to effective solutions. With experience in three other geology firms, she joined Zijin with solid expertise, but here, she discovered a sense of fulfillment unlike any before.
“Working at Zijin has brought me a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment,” Milica says happily. “I’ve gained valuable guidance here and broadened my perspective, developing a deeper understanding of what I do.” She is confident that, with the support of her team, she can achieve her aspirations and make greater contributions to geological exploration efforts.
Milica Mladenovic: Returning Home
After years of working in South America, Milica Mladenovic decided to return to Serbia and join Zijin’s operations in Bor to be closer to her family. When she was in South America, the distance had made her long for home, and the birth of her child only strengthened this feeling. Upon learning that Zijin was developing projects in her hometown of Bor, she became so excited that she couldn’t sleep that night. Soon afterward, she packed her bags and made her way back.
“Here, I can fully commit to both work and life,” she reflects, grateful for the opportunity to balance her career with family. Holding herself to the highest standards, Milica transitioned from geological exploration to QAQC analysis, eventually advancing to senior geologist. “From sample collection to data analysis, every step is a new challenge.”
She approaches every task with enthusiasm and dedication, from rock crushing and grinding to chemical composition analysis and microstructure examination. For Milica, nothing is more rewarding than discovering something new in the field of geology. New discoveries from fieldwork would light up the world for her.
Milica is now planning her next vacation, eager to explore the world with her children.
Saska Lipic: A pleasant adventure
Saska Lipic, a geology graduate from Prijedor Mining College, began her career with BEM this March as a junior geologist. She chose Zijin because of its reputation and the prospects for professional growth for young geologists like her, as the company offers equal opportunities for both men and women. Saska learned about the company’s strong development programs for new talent through television and social media, which piqued her interest.
“Zijin creates personalized training programs for every new employee,” Saska enthusiastically shares. “These programs cover everything from safety protocols and corporate culture to technical fundamentals and fieldwork. The company organizes a variety of enriching activities, such as seminars, morning meetings, regular meetings, and even sports and cultural events. It’s really amazing!” Saska expresses her excitement about the company’s focus on talent development and safety training, almost overflowing with enthusiasm as she speaks about it.
Saska hopes to take her family on a tour of the mines in the spring when flowers are in full bloom. “I want to bring my family to see the beauty of the mines. It will be an unforgettable trip and a shared memory for us,” she says with a smile, looking forward to sharing her professional world with her loved ones.
Looking ahead, Saska is full of anticipation for her future at Zijin. She hopes to make a quick transition from school to the workplace. Her goal is to become a well-rounded, hands-on professional who has deep knowledge of theories and rich practical experience. She aspires to advance from her current role as a junior geologist to a more senior position over time.
