Serbia Zijin Mining Strives for Gender Equality: “Safety Helmets Have No Gender”
2024/09/11 3000

Tamara Božinovski, 35, is the Deputy Head of the Surveying Section in the Geology Department at Serbia Zijin Mining, one of Zijin Mining Group’s subsidiaries in Serbia. In early March, she led over twenty students from the Technical School of Bor on a tour of the mining area, confidently demonstrating the use of surveying equipment.

"Yes, I'm a mining survey engineer. It's not unusual; safety helmets have no gender," Tamara said with a smile. "The notion that 'mining is a man's job' is a long-standing prejudice. Female employees bring fresh perspectives to the mine. Even after 11 years, I remain passionate about my career. This job is challenging but offers numerous opportunities. Both Chinese and Serbian colleagues are highly professional and supportive of female workers."

In the mining industry, women have long been underrepresented in key positions, particularly in fields traditionally dominated by men. Serbia Zijin Mining understands this challenge and is steadfast in its commitment to promoting gender diversity and creating an inclusive work environment.

According to the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), women typically make up 10% to 20% of the global mining workforce, and only 5% to 15% in senior management and technical roles. At Serbia Zijin Mining, women constitute 18% of the workforce and 18.8% of the management team, significantly higher than the industry average.

Women at Serbia Zijin Mining are gaining equal opportunities and respect in roles traditionally dominated by men, excelling in positions such as mining, mineral processing, electromechanical engineering, environmental protection, and safety management.
