Rosebel Gold Mines Empowers Communities in Suriname with Infrastructure Upgrades
2025/01/06 3090

Pikin Saramacca, Suriname – On December 17, Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (“RGM”), one of the major gold producers in Suriname, officially handed over three vital infrastructure projects to local communities in the Pikin Saramacca area of the Sipaliwini district. These projects, completed at a cost of approximately US$ 657,000, were designed to address critical needs in water, electricity, and transportation, significantly improving daily life for community members.

The initiatives—funded by RGM through the Rosebel Community Fund (“RCF”)—include the upgrade of a drinking water purification and distribution system, the modernization of a power supply system, and the construction of a new log bridge to provide safer access to the communities. The projects were identified by the communities as top priorities for regional development. To ensure the sustainability of the facilities, RCF has partnered with the contractors to implement a one-year maintenance and training program.

The upgraded water system now features a rehabilitated distribution network, a modern purification system, and a solar-powered energy source, providing reliable, 24-hour access to clean drinking water. The electrification project introduced a larger-capacity, fuel-efficient generator and modernized power lines to deliver consistent electricity supply. The new bridge addressed the need for safer and more reliable transportation by replacing unsafe crossing conditions.

At the handover ceremony, H.E. David Abiamofo, Minister of Natural Resources, congratulated the communities on the successful completion of these transformative projects and thanked all stakeholders for their collaboration. He outlined similar initiatives led by his Ministry, highlighting the critical role of partnerships with organizations like Rosebel Gold Mines, international institutions, and foreign governments in providing funding and expertise. Emphasizing the importance of sustainability, the Minister encouraged the communities to make full use of the new facilities and to preserve them as vital resources for future generations.

Mr. Walter Bojaksi, District Commissioner of Upper Saramacca, expressed his gratitude to all parties involved in making these vital projects a reality. He emphasized the transformative impact of the drinking water, electrification, and bridge projects on the communities, highlighting how they address essential needs and improve daily life.

Mr. Qianjie Wang, Chair of the Rosebel Community Fund and RGM General Manager, congratulated the communities of Pikin Saramacca for the infrastructure improvement. In his speech, he reflected on how water, electricity and a bridge are a cornerstone of sustainable development. With regards to the bridge, he said that a bridge passes through the hearts and minds of people, emphasizing that it is more than just a structure; it is a lifeline connecting communities, enabling trade, and strengthening social bonds. Mr. Wang closed his speech by encouraging the communities to make full use of these new facilities to enhance their development and well-being. He expressed that he looks forward to witnessing their ongoing progress.

An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) conducted by RGM in 2018 revealed that nearly 83% of households consumed impure water, with only 15% treating it before consumption. The report also highlighted the unreliable electricity supply, as communities rely on generators that operate for less than six hours per day due to limited fuel availability. Prolonged fuel shortages result in complete power outages, further lowering the quality of life and hindering economic activities.

Since its acquisition by Zijin Mining in early 2023, RGM has carried out a series of community projects in areas such as education, infrastructure, and healthcare, earning widespread recognition in Suriname. These efforts demonstrate RGM’s commitment to empowering local communities and fostering long-term, positive change for a sustainable future.
