On May 16, Zijin Mining was included in Fortune’s China ESG Impact List 2025, marking its first appearance on the prestigious ranking. The company was recognized for its significant efforts in environmental stewardship, employee welfare, and community engagement.
Zijin Mining is one of only four mining companies on the list, alongside peers like CMOC, Tsingshan, and Huayou Cobalt. The list, published annually since 2022, identifies industry benchmarks for sustainability in China. Fortune highlighted Zijin Mining as a “traditional giant advancing greener, socially responsible practices based on ESG principles”. The company’s initiatives in reducing carbon emissions, promoting the use of clean energy, and assessing the environmental impact of its copper production were particularly commended.
Fortune noted that based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, the company evaluated the potential environmental impacts of two copper production processes—pyrometallurgical (high-temperature smelting) and hydrometallurgical (chemical leaching)—from ore extraction to cathode copper output. The assessment is designed to help establish an up-to-date carbon footprint inventory across the entire copper production lifecycle.
Fortune’s China ESG Impact List is among the country’s most authoritative ESG evaluations, assessing performance across environmental, social, and governance metrics. This year’s edition features 100 companies, including 69 Chinese firms and 31 multinationals operating in China, spanning sectors such as renewable energy, manufacturing, internet, finance, and healthcare.
